Music has always been a backbone of black freedom struggles and thus music is an integral part of this film. The New Black team drew upon gospel, R & B, and re-makes of classic songs in order to create a rich aural world for the film. We hope you enjoy!

Composer


Kathryn Bostic is a prolific composer,pianist and singer-songwriter. She is a recipient of several awards and fellowships including the Sundance Fellowship for Feature Film Scoring, Sundance Fellow for Documentary Scoring, BMI Conducting Fellowship, and the ASCAP Musical Theater Workshop. She has created the score for a variety of award winning documentaries on ITVS and PBS American Experience including “Marcus Garvey”,“A Place of Our Own”,”Soul Food Junkies”, “Thick Dark Fog” and “Promised Land” Other score credits include “Venus Vs” and“Middle of Nowhere” by Sundance award winning director Ava DuVernay. Her Broadway credits include a Drama Desk nomination for “Outstanding Music in a Play” for “Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo” starring Robin Williams. Her score and ambient textures garnered a win in the sound design category and a Tony nomination. She also collaborated with renowned playwright August Wilson writing the score for the Broadway production “Gem of the Ocean” and several productions of his last play “Radio Golf.”

Kathryn is also an accomplished vocalist and pianist. She has toured and/or recorded with a variety of artists including k.d. lang, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Nas, and David Byrne. www.kathrynbostic.com

Music Supervisor


Korie Enyard was raised between Chicago and Detroit and began reading and playing music at the age of nine years old. Early exposure to Classic Rock and Roll, Alternative Rock, New Wave, Gospel, Jazz, Underground House,Techno , Soul, Blues and Disco helped to develop a relationship with music that would lead to deejaying and promoting . For years she worked as a event promoter in the Midwest promoting House and Techno artist like Theo Parrish, Moodymann, Danny Krivit, Ron Trent, Alton Miller, Diz, and a host of other musician and talent through the years. She also worked with the likes of Rich Medina, Delano Smith, Mike Clark, Norm Tally and Sabine Blazin as a popular deejay. In the late 90′s she along with her partner K.Hand established the indie label, Acacia Records and the event planning company Exclusive Productions. She also worked for the music magazine Wax Poetics upon moving to New York City.

Korie earned her Bachelor in Mass Communications from St. John’s University and certification as a Licensed Audio Engineer from The Institute of Audio Research in New York City.

Steve Silk Hurley
Steve “Silk” Hurley is a producer, songwriter, DJ, and 4-Time GRAMMY® Nominated Remixer. He began his career as a DJ, artist, producer, and pioneer of Chicago’s “House Music”.  He has worked with hundreds of various artists including Prince, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, CeCe Peniston, R. Kelly, and Mary J. Blige. Silk has still remained true to his DJ roots. He is an international DJ, and has been featured since 1994 on the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show.  Hurley has managed to build a reputation as “The Mashup King” with his mix show segment called “The Old Skool New Skool Remix”.
